Sturgeon fishing:
Sept will be the start of
my peak season giant sturgeon trips once the spawning sanctuary
opens Sept 1. Sept and October will be very good for the
oversized sturgeon and after Oct 1 keeper fishing opens back up. The keeper fishery in
Astoria has been less than good this year. The season in the
estuary has been extended until the August closure river wide
for retention of sturgeon. The next good opportunity to keep a
sturgeon will be Oct 1 when the upper river opens back up for
retention. Lots of great catch and release fishing to be had,
just getting tougher every year to fill freezers - which we
shouldn't be doing anyway, that is the reason keeper hunters are
having trouble catching fish - to many fish are in the freezer
already.
-
Effective May 1 the spawning
sanctuary goes into effect below Bonneville dam, be aware that
it has been extended downstream basically to Multnomah Falls and
now includes August. They have also created a spawning sanctuary
on the Willamette from the I-205 bridge to the falls for the
same months as the Columbia. The wall at Oregon City is now
closed for all fishing permanently.
Lots of new rules this
year on both rivers so make sure your up on them before you go.

Summer Chinook Salmon:
Exciting news here. The season for June hogs also known as
summer chinook salmon opened June 16 and is scheduled to stay
open through July. This season in the past has been very short but now with
the marked fish only requirement it means we will be salmon
fishing from June 16 all the way into the fall months. The
summer chinook season runs right into the fall chinook season.
For the most part up to this week most fish caught have been
late springers. The true summer fish are just now starting to
show and with the river dropping into reasonable levels July is
going to be the best month for the big June Hogs. These summer
fish seem to prefer smaller sized spinners, they like the
wrapped kwikfish too but with all the big sturgeon in the gorge
its best to leave the bait off them unless you want to chase big
sturgeon all day. Update for this week, salmon catches have
slowed with the counts dropping over the dam, still some fish
around but the majority of the catch is now steelhead.
-
Steelhead:
Columbia river steelhead action is hot and going to only get hotter in
the next couple of weeks. Most are anchored with small spinners
or kwikfish, flatfish or spinglo's. Look for 6-20 foot depths
with a little less current than main channel and you will find
them. The run size is forecast to be near a half million fish so
its only going to get better as we get nearer the peak of the
run which is usually mid August.
-
Buoy 10: Only a couple of weeks
till our most famous salmon fishery gets under way. Buoy 10 as
its known is the Columbia River estuary in Astoria Oregon. This
years run looks to be a great one for king salmon and a bit slow
on the silver salmon. Typically its a lights out fish on all day
type of deal especially with good numbers of Coho. This year it
most likely will be a lights out chinook salmon bite but expect
only the last 10 days or so to be decent on the Coho. I will be
fishing at buoy 10 the last three weeks of August this year. I
do have a limited number of open days left if you need a guide.

Columbia River Walleye:
July is prime time in the Portland area
for walleyes. The river will need to drop a bit and clear up but
as soon as it does its game on.
-
Crabbing
Report: July is the earliest I would go and expect decent results on
crab. Some bays will start to produce some decent catches of
legal sized males in July with the catches only improving as we
get into Aug and Sept.
