Steelhead fishing rods and reels by pro Guide The links at the left go to Some of the best steelhead fishing rod and reel manufacturers. Most steelhead gear is very similar to Bass fishing gear with the exception of using a longer rod. Most steelhead fishing rods are in the 8 to 11 foot range and rated from 6 to 20 lbs. Everyone has a different preference on actions. Bobber rods are generally longer 9 ft and above and drift fishing and plug rods are usually from 8 to 9 foot in length. A good all purpose rod is one that is 8 1/2 foot in length and rated from 12 to 20 lb test with a medium heavy action. Most steelhead fisherman prefer bait casting rods over spinning gear. Spinning rods can be used effectively but are not as good as the casting rods for line and bait control. Many specialized rods are also made for side drifting, plugs, back bouncing and so on. Most people will do just fine with a good all purpose rod. Prices on salmon and steelhead rods can also vary greatly. Good rods start at around $80 and go up to $300+. I prefer using mid range rods that in my opinion are just as good as the high dollar rods. Reels begin at about $50 and go up to $250. Most bass sized reels work just fine for steelhead.
